Floth’s Brisbane Office Named Queensland’s Inaugural WELL Pre-Certified Building

Floth has been honoured with WELL pre-certification for its Brisbane office. The award was given through WELL v2, the most recent version of the WELL Building Standard (WELL) from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).

This news distinguishes Queensland’s inaugural WELL v2 certification, while Floth also got the highest certification level – Platinum. An independently verified, performance-reliant system for measuring, certifying and observing aspects of buildings that affect people’s health, WELL measures by metrics like air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.

WELL is based in a network of evidence-based research that investigates the connection between the structures where we inhabit about 90 percent of our days, and the health and wellness effects on the individuals inside these buildings.

Floth’s head office, based at 69 Robertson Street in Brisbane’s lively suburb of Fortitude Valley, involves an optimised building design and building that prioritises it among the most sustainable buildings in the globe.

The architectural design includes a trio of storeys of office space, developed by the firm during 2015, with the building services engineering and sustainability design handled in-house.

Primary characteristics like green trellis walls, drought-resistant plantings, sustainable material choices, indoor air quality incentives, low carbon electric systems, water conservation and energy efficient measures, have lent themselves to 69 Robertson Street’s recognition by the IWBI.

What is evident, says Floth Group Managing Director Glenn Ralph, is that the spaces we occupy have a significant influence on our health and success, which is what makes WELL standards so vital.

To get a WELL pre-certification from the IWBI, 69 Robertson Street was subjected to a stringent review executed by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the third-party certification body for WELL, to guarantee it achieved all WELL pre-certification performance specifications.

WELL pre-certification is an optional phase in the certification procedure for WELL projects, which permits registered projects to review work already done and verify that they are following the right avenues to attain certification.

As such, 69 Robert Street is set to be awarded full WELL certification following a final evaluation by GBCI.

The announcement arrives in the wake of 69 Robertson Street’s distinction in early 2020 as the sole building in Australia, and one of a trio in the globe, nominated as a ‘Game Changer’ in the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) Online Case Study Library.

The WorldGBC Library contains the most revolutionary samples of sustainable building from across the globe, with every case study profiling a structure that boasts enhanced performance related to wellness benefits and net zero operational carbon, as confirmed by established certification schemes, rating tools or other verification systems.

The building also is known for attaining many firsts in Australia, including the inaugural six-star Green Star Design and As Built v1.1 certified rating in the nation and the inaugural six-star National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) indoor environment rating.

69 Robertson Street has been named the first building to adapt the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) Zero Carbon Standard Building definition by virtue of energy-efficient design, 28% on-site renewable energy contribution from a roof-mounted photovoltaic system and 100% ‘greenpower’ purchase to offset lingering operations emissions.

Other national and international awards include:
• First Australian winner of the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance category at the 2016 World Green Building Council Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Building Awards
• Winner of the Consultants Excellence category at the 2016 UDIA (Qld) Awards for Excellence
• Winner of the Best Sustainable Development – New Buildings award at the 2017 Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards
• Winner of the Energex Award for Sustainability in Business at the 2017 Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Business Awards

Additionally, the building has been recognised as the first Climate Active Carbon Neutral building in Queensland, in conjunction with the achievement of 5.5-star NABERS Energy (without GreenPower) rating and 6-Star (with Green Power) rating, as well as a 6-star NABERS Water rating.
